EVCharge4U founder Paul Nijssen reflects on more than a decade of EV charging deployments, the rise of multifamily charging, and why maximizing existing electrical infrastructure is often the smartest path forward.

When Paul Nijssen installed his first EV chargers in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012, electric vehicles were still largely the domain of early adopters. More than a decade later, EVCharge4U has helped deploy thousands of charging stations across Northern California, giving Paul a front-row seat to the industry’s transformation from a niche market to mainstream infrastructure.

As founder of EVCharge4U, Paul has witnessed the challenges, opportunities, and technological advancements that have shaped the EV charging industry from its earliest days. Today, his company serves multifamily housing communities, commercial properties, and fleet operators across the Bay Area, helping customers navigate one of the most significant transportation shifts of our time.

From Master Electrician to EV Charging Pioneer

Before founding EVCharge4U, Paul built a successful career as a master electrician and chief estimator in Europe before relocating to the United States more than two decades ago. After years working in the electrical industry, he launched his own contracting business and eventually found himself at the forefront of a rapidly emerging market.

“I’ve been working in the EV field since 2012,” Paul explains. “Since then, we’ve installed thousands and thousands of EV charging stations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.”

What began as primarily residential installations has evolved into a highly specialized business focused on some of the industry’s most demanding charging applications.

The Rise of Multifamily and Fleet Charging

Like many contractors who entered the EV market early, EVCharge4U initially focused on single-family residential charging. As EV adoption accelerated, however, Paul recognized growing demand from apartment communities, condominiums, and fleet operators.

Today, multifamily housing and fleet charging represent the company’s core business.

The shift reflects a broader industry trend. While homeowners can often install charging relatively easily, multifamily properties face unique challenges related to electrical capacity, parking layouts, ownership structures, and long-term planning.

For Paul, helping customers overcome those challenges has become one of the most rewarding aspects of the business.

Why More Charging Doesn’t Always Mean More Power

One of the most common misconceptions Paul encounters is the assumption that adding EV charging requires major electrical upgrades.

Property owners often expect they will need larger utility services, new transformers, or costly infrastructure projects before installing chargers. In reality, advancements in charging technology and energy management have changed what’s possible.

“The technology has changed so much already,” Paul says. “If you have the right charging hardware and a good charge point operator that can handle dynamic load management, you can do so much without having to upgrade the electrical infrastructure.”

Rather than immediately recommending expensive utility upgrades, EVCharge4U focuses on maximizing the capacity customers already have available.

“Build with the capacity you have and use that instead,” he explains. “It saves a lot of money, even in infrastructure costs.”

For multifamily properties in particular, this strategy can significantly reduce project costs while accelerating deployment timelines.

Breaking the Chicken-and-Egg Cycle

One challenge Paul has observed throughout the industry’s evolution is the relationship between charging availability and EV ownership.

Property owners are often hesitant to invest in charging because only a small percentage of residents currently drive EVs. At the same time, residents may delay purchasing an EV because charging isn’t available where they live.

“The chicken-and-egg story is real,” Paul says.

He recalls a multifamily property in Emeryville (CA) where EVCharge4U installed charging infrastructure more than a decade ago. At the time, only a handful of chargers were needed. As EV adoption increased among residents, the property eventually expanded its charging capabilities to meet growing demand.

Experiences like these underscore the importance of planning for future growth, even when current demand appears limited.

The Importance of Open Standards

As the EV charging industry matures, Paul believes flexibility is becoming increasingly important for site hosts and property owners.

That’s one reason EVCharge4U has long supported OCPP-compliant charging solutions and open standards.

“We specialize in OCPP charging stations,” Paul explains. “If somebody isn’t happy, we can switch them over.”

By avoiding proprietary ecosystems, site hosts gain the flexibility to adapt as technology, software platforms, and operational needs evolve over time. For customers making long-term infrastructure investments, that flexibility can provide valuable protection against future uncertainty.

A Practical Approach to Electrification
